The current population is around 207,000. 80% of whom are white and 12% of whom are Hispanic. The town was founded in 1891 as a rail siding for the Arizona Eastern Railway and takes its name from William Gilbert, whose land the town was built on. In 2008 Gilbert appeared on Money magazine's list of Best Places to Live.

Gilbert, AZ received its nickname, "the Hay Capitol of the World" early in its history. It became a prime farming spot in 1911 during the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals and remained so until the 1920s. Present-day Gilbert has little industry anymore, not even farming. Most residents commute to Mesa or Phoenix for work. Of the jobs available in town, most are in the health care, computer technology, or construction fields.

There are two medical centers in Gilbert, Mercy-Gilbert Medical Center, which is a full-service hospital, and Gilbert Emergency Hospital, which deals primarily with acute care. There are also many more medical facilities available in Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix. Commuter busses to downtown Phoenix leave from the park-and-ride facility, and there are plans for a larger commuter rail system in the future.

Gilbert has lots of museums, art galleries, theaters, and events to occupy your time as well as having access to entertainment facilities in Phoenix. The Hale Center Theater is the local home to plays, musicals, and children's theater and the Gilbert Historical Museum commemorates the town's history. The Heard Museum has over 75,000 southwestern Indian artifacts to look at in climate controlled settings. For the more adventurous and hands-on historian, there are numerous ancient Indian ruins in the area to explore. Gilbert also hosts a yearly fair and rodeo that is a popular draw.

The average value for a house or condo is around $342,000. This value has increased in the last few years and is expected to continue to rise.
