When you hear about a location with a population above 210,000, situated in
the more populated area of the United States, certain images spring to mind.
That's a good sized city; it has probably been around a while and therefore
it may appear run down, with high crime rates and probably some pollution mixed
in.
Well, the town of Gilbert is unique in America. As you may have just deduced,
Gilbert is actually called a town, despite the fact that it is so populated.
This, in fact, was a decision made by local residents, who felt that town more
describes the atmosphere that their entire community gives off.
Indeed, were you to look at Gilbert piece by piece rather than as a whole described
by statistics, you would see that town indeed is an apt description for the
entire community. It is a neat and tidy place, although one could hardly call
it little. How did Gilbert retain this tidy atmosphere? Let's take a look.
Quick, late population explosion
Gilbert has not always been as large, population wise, at it is now. In the
ten years between 1990 and 2000, the town grew faster than any other community
in Arizona and indeed faster than most cities anywhere in the United States.
Developers were busy putting copper lugs in place to hold together the hundreds
of homes which were put up during this time, as word about a quiet and undeveloped
community in the heart of the Valley got out.
Lack of Heavy Industry
A big part of Gilbert's ability to stay clean has been the lack of industrial
development in the town. Prior to the boom of the 90s, the area was solely
agriculture and tourism focused. No factories, plants, or even major ranch operations
meant that little effluent has ever been built up. Indeed, the only waste water
grit removal needed in the area is that typical for Arizona, which needs to
recycle as much water as possible!
New Neighborhoods and Homes
That rapid expansion meant that most of the homes and neighborhoods in the
Gilbert area are less than two decades old. That means a lot of modern houses,
with efficient systems put in and brand new interior and exteriors. With the
building boom largely behind us, those who used to be making early morning noise building houses are now working somewhere else, maybe in a factory working with a temperature calibrator.
The neighborhoods themselves have been designed to emulate all the best qualities
of small town America. Green lawns and white picket fences abound, and almost
every backyard contains a pool and patio.
Of course, the lack of industry in the area is not exactly ideal for commercial
mortgage lenders or for people wishing to work in the town itself. Many residents
commute to outlying communities for work in larger companies, although the town
is becoming well known as a medical center for the entire surrounding area.
If you are looking to start a business or find employment in our town outside
of the medical industry, retail is probably the best way to go. The upscale
residents of the city are always looking for aquarium heaters, landscaping equipment,
electronic goods, pool supplies, and the hundreds of other things that make
a house a home.
All in all, Gilbert is a good place to make a home. It's a tidy town
committed to retaining its sense of community in every way.
